What is the Healing Light Spiritual Centre?

As we are reaching a much broader audience, many have asked “what is the Healing Light Spiritual Centre and what does it do”? To answer these questions, we have put together a potted history of our centre and why we love doing what we do.

The Healing Light was founded by  Celia Gail Stuart (previously known as Celia Gail Crawford)  through the guidance of Spirit. At the time she was working in one of Brighton’s many Holistic Centres  running spiritual healing and psychic development classes with many students successfully completing and passing their Sussex Healers examinations and others going on to become successful working mediums.   She  then moved  many of her circles to  her home in Portslade and occasional public demonstrations featuring fledgling and local mediums were held in small, rented, halls. The largest public demonstration at that time was held at Portslade Town Hall and featured an up and coming local medium by the name of Colin Fry.

The Days of the Co-operative.

Eventually things developed and Celia was guided to move on to new premises and a shop in Brighton Road, Shoreham by Sea, with classes and workshops being run by Celia and other tutors during the day and evenings. Public demonstrations crowded, or perhaps, overcrowded into the small first floor front room! Things were going pretty well and the Healing Light Co-operative was formed from this evolving group of like minded people.

The Ethos

The founding principle and ethos of the Healing Light Co-operative was to be as a non-profit, non charitable group whose purpose is to provide facilities and a harmonious environment for like minded individuals and groups to work together in ways that bring benefit, understanding, healing and joy to others.

The Co-operative offered evening classes and workshops on the psychic, mediumistic, healing, personal development and other related subjects run by tutors who passionately believed in providing the individual with a safe, friendly environment in which to nurture their gifts. An infant newsletter, mailing list and web site came into being at around this time.

A local health food shop became available and Celia, together with some of the Co-operative members took on this business as a commercial venture, based on the Healing Light ethos which ran on an individual basis, until in 2002, Celia moved The Healing Light Co-Operative and commercial activities back together into larger premises at East Street, Shoreham. As a health food shop and holistic centre it offered the usual treatments and health based products, together with various development classes and groups. These premises were situated at the centre of the old town of in the most picturesque of settings, overlooked by the stunningly beautiful church of St. Mary de Haura with its magnificent vaulted interior and flying buttresses.  Now well into its ninth century, it is celebrated as one of the most important non-cathedral churches in the country.

It is appropriate that The Healing Light was to be beside St. Mary’s as we are told by historians, that this is the very area to which the Knights of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem came to establish their hospital on land just south of the high street, long since swallowed by the River Adur.  During their occupation, the Knights, commonly known as the Knights Hospitallers, grew herbs for use in the preparation of potions with which to treat the sick.  Certainly at the time and in some way, we liked to believe that this tradition was being revived at the Healing Light, possibly on the very spot that the Knights grew their herbs and administered to the needy.

Development classes and workshops continued above the shop in East Street and larger monthly demonstrations began to be held in the function room of a local sheltered accommodation block as we attracted larger audiences. Previously, meetings had been hosted at this venue by a kindly and very spiritual lady who wanted to pass the reins onto someone more youthful who could move things forward, so the timing was right for the Healing Light to move into hosting regular, larger public demonstrations and over the next few years the monthly demonstrations at the Day Centre at Milward Court became the main focus of activity with smaller development groups continuing at East Street until the Health Food business was sold and Celia moved abroad to continue her spiritual work in Portugal.

Thanks to the leadership of Cherry O`Sullivan and our enthusiastic band of helpers the Healing Light continued to thrive and gain stature and reputation for presenting the public with some of the countries best and most entertaining mediums available as a not for profit centre. Several years ago we decided that the concept of the Healing Light Co-operative had served it purpose. Development circles had moved into people’s homes and the larger workshops held at the Day Centre, so the description of being a co-operative no longer reflected our activities at Milward Court and we needed to redefine our image. A new logo was created and building upon the founding ethos of The Healing Light Co-operative became the Healing Light Spiritual Centre.

The sole purpose Healing Light Spiritual Centre’s monthly demonstrations is to promote the best possible demonstrations of mediumship, within our budget (as a ‘not for profit’ centre), that provides evidence that an aspect of ourselves survives death.

We have no desire to convince anyone of this survival. It is up to the evidence, provided by our mediums, to speak for itself and the recipient of any message to make up their own mind as to its validity. All we do is provide our audience with an opportunity to come and see some of the best mediums around.

Monthly Demonstrations

These demonstrations are not a religious service, (although some mediums may choose to open and close in prayer and this is respected) but a celebration full of learning, laughter, amazement and fun that brings joy and understanding to all. Even if you do not personally receive a message, our hope is that you are inspired by what you have seen and that you can take something positive and uplifting away with you. We are delighted to be able to present before the public such well known names as Tony Stockwell, Colin Fry, Darren Brittain and Colin Bates on a regular basis together with providing a showcase for the best new talent around.

Day Workshops

Our engaging and inspirational psychic and mediumistic development workshops under the tutelage of the best teachers in their field are tailored towards those taking their first fundamental steps, up to the more advanced student (or to those who are already working mediums) by providing them with the right tools with which to develop their full potential by building confidence and use of best practice.

Sunday Demonstrations

We hold a demonstration on the first Sunday of each month at 11am which consists of a 40 minute demonstration by one of our local mediums. All are welcome to attend and entry is free although donations are always welcome to cover costs. Healing is also available after the meeting for those in need.

Charity and Community Work.

The Healing Light Spiritual Centre holds an annual fund raising demonstration for charitable or other worthy causes with the help of Medium Marlene Woolgar and our supporters, for example, in 2011 we raised £1,300 towards sending a little girl suffering from Diplegia Cerebral Palsy for life changing treatment in the USA. Last year Marlene has kindly agreed donate her services again as our medium for our July fund raiser in support of Sussex Air Ambulance and again 100% of the money generated from this event, collection boxes and other activities which generated over £1,000 went directly to the charity.

Expand our educational programme and continue hosting our residential seminar held at the luxurious, three star, Windsor Hotel in Worthing. This comfortable venue is a stones throw away from Worthing's delightful Edwardian promenade and offers just the right surroundings for our psychic and mediumistic development weekend seminar. The seminar will have something to offer anyone from the beginner to those who are already working mediums and psychics with our highly motivated and inspirational tutors. Our aim? To make our students good better and better best.
